It's time to GAME!
Introducing a new addition to the Paradoxa family
Back in June of this year I released a zine called Paradoxa. It was more of a short book, really - a treatise on exercise, deconstructing it into its component parts.
If you’re interested in checking it out, you can find the digital version here:
If you’re more of an analog person, you can buy a print copy here:
But I’m not writing this newsletter to sell you on Paradoxa (though I might be biased, I do think it’s a pretty cool idea).
What I’d like to talk about today is something new I just finished: a companion game built on the principles of Paradoxa.
I really went out on a limb for the name.
It’s called Paradoxa: Companion Dice Game.
Wild, I know.
In Paradoxa (the book) I present a lot of ideas: a bunch of concepts that dissect and abstract exercise, and some general instruction on how to implement those ideas. But I wanted to provide something even more simple and actionable.
So I made a game.
It started as a card game, but that quickly proved itself to be more trouble than it was worth (though I might revisit it at some point…). Rolling dice, especially digital ones, is a lot more accessible.
It’s a simple game, made up of one movement: lie down, and stand back up. The Elements of Movement from Paradoxa are divided up into 4 categories: Shape, Space, Movement Qualities, and Conditions. Players roll 4d10 (4 10-sided dice), and apply the relevant modifications from each category to the movement.
It’s an exercise in movement exploration and physical problem solving. Instead of choreographed exercise, players can solve movement problems in whatever way they are able, in whatever way they see fit.
You can find a digital version of the game with instructions here:
Paradoxa: Companion Dice Game DIGITAL version
Just like the book Paradoxa, there are free community copies available for those lacking the financial resources to buy it. Just scroll down to the bottom of the page to find those.
If you’d like a print copy of the Paradoxa Companion Dice Game, buy a print copy of the book Paradoxa. I’m including them for free along with the zine, but that’s only with the first print run. I have around 80 copies left, so get your print copy of Paradoxa AND the dice game.
I’ll even repost the link here so you don’t have to scroll back up:
